EWA Stages
There are five key stages in the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) process. It is important to take care at each stage to ensure you meet all requirements. Once issued, the EWA temporary card is valid for a maximum of 18 months, during which all assessments must be completed. Successfully completing all stages allows candidates to build a comprehensive portfolio and demonstrate the competence required to obtain an ECS Gold Card. The five stages are outlined below:
- EWA Eligibility
- Registration
- ECS Testing
- Assessment Stage
- Interview Stage
The Five Stages
EWA Eligibility
The first stage is to complete a pre-eligibility checklist. This short set of questions helps us confirm that the programme is the right fit for you and that you meet the core entry requirements before progressing further. It also allows our team to provide accurate guidance, streamline the application process, and ensure you are fully supported from the start of your journey.
Registration
Once you pass the Eligibility stage, you will be able to register for the online programme. As part of registration, you will need to provide:
- Personal information
- Details of your industry experience and/or qualifications
- Name and contact details of your sponsor
Following this, you will receive access to our online EWA portal, which you will use throughout the programme. You will receive further Information, Advice and Guidance, and be able to confirm if this is the right pathway for you. You will also be asked to submit a passport-style photograph and your National Insurance Number.
ECS Testing
After registration is complete, you will receive an email containing instructions for booking and completing your ECS tests. Please follow the instructions carefully, as failure to do so may result in an unsuccessful outcome. You are required to pass the following:
- ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness Test (30 minutes), Pass mark: 86% (43 out of 50 questions)
- ECS BEMS Test (90 minutes), Pass mark: 60% (84 out of 140 questions across 14 sections), After completion, you will receive a gap analysis identifying areas for improvement.
Once both tests are passed, you will receive your Experienced Worker Assessment Card, valid for 18 months while you complete the Assessment Stage.
Assessment Stage
You are required to complete three assessments covering the 15 duties, based on work you have carried out within the last two years. These must be uploaded to the EWA portal along with any supporting evidence. You must also obtain sign-off from your nominated sponsor and submit signed Witness Testimonies. All evidence and written assessments must be your own work. Each assessment will be reviewed by a qualified assessor to ensure a fair and accurate evaluation process. If needed, resubmissions are permitted.
Interview Stage
Once the assessment stage is complete, you will be invited to an online interview with an industry technical expert. This professional discussion provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and competency.
After successful completion of the interview and approval from the technical expert, you will be awarded your ECS Gold Card.
